Thank you for your interest in learning more about Bank Swallows. This page is a collaboration between Birds Canada and the Atlantic Canada Bank Swallow Working Group, a collection of organizations dedicated to monitoring and restoring Bank Swallow populations across Atlantic Canada.

Bank Swallows are the fastest declining of the aerial insectivores and need conservation action. Over the last 50 years, the Bank Swallow population in Canada has shown a 98% decline (Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) 2021). Bank Swallows have been listed as threatened in Canada under the Species at Risk Act since 2017 (ECCC 2021). It is illegal to disturb breeding birds or damage nesting habitat. The main stressors to Bank Swallows are intensive pesticide use (reducing prey availability), loss of habitat (foraging, roosting, and nesting), climate change, nest destruction at aggregate sites, and collisions with vehicles (ECCC 2021).
