It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Betty Chanyi, a cherished member of the Birds Canada family and a beloved figure in Norfolk County, Ontario. Betty was a lifelong resident of Norfolk, and her passion for community and nature shone brightly in all that she did.
Betty’s contributions to Birds Canada were extraordinary and far-reaching. During her tenure on the Board of Directors from 2018 to 2024, her leadership played a pivotal role in our commitment to critical bird research, conservation, and education at the Long Point Bird Observatory (LPBO) and across Canada. Her leadership was instrumental in rebuilding the internationally significant Tip Research Station, ensuring that LPBO remains a critical center for bird research, conservation, and education.
As a long-time supporter of Birds Canada dating back to 1990, Betty was also Chair of the LPBO Committee, and an active participant in the Friends of LPBO, Betty’s influence extended well beyond the boardroom, touching the hearts and minds of many in the broader Long Point region and beyond. Her very home was an inspiring example of nature stewardship with conservation lands, ponds, Barn Swallow habitat, and a Motus Wildlife Tracking System Station!
Her love for bird conservation was also exemplified by her enthusiastic participation in the annual Birdathon, where she not only raised funds but also inspired others to appreciate the beauty and importance of the natural world around us.
Betty’s contributions extended far beyond her work with Birds Canada. She was a former Norfolk County Councillor, school principal, and education administrator, bringing her expertise in volunteerism, municipal government, and education to every aspect of her life. Her involvement in the Norfolk County Woodlot Owner’s Association, the Delhi Community Health Centre Board, and as a founding member of the Port Rowan Farmer’s Market demonstrated her dedication to fostering a thriving community.
In recognition of her incredible contributions, the Birds Canada Board of Directors has resolved to name a lookout to be built on Birds Canada’s Port Rowan Headquarters property in Betty’s honour. This lookout, overlooking the Inner Bay, will stand as a lasting tribute to her tireless efforts in supporting bird conservation and education.
Betty’s kindness, generosity, and dedication to both people and nature will be deeply missed. She leaves behind a legacy of service, community, and a passion for conservation that will continue to inspire us all. Our hearts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.
In remembrance of Betty Chanyi, we honour her contributions and celebrate the incredible impact she had on Birds Canada, Norfolk County, and all those fortunate enough to know her. Betty’s spirit will forever be a part of the places and people she loved.
Relatives and friends will be received for Funeral Service on Saturday, September 28.
