Volunteer Field Biologists at Long Point Bird Observatory

Long Point Bird Observatory relies on volunteers to help deliver its programs, particularly during the spring and fall migration periods. With training and support along the way, your role may include conducting bird and ecological surveys, extracting and banding birds as part of migration monitoring, scribing data, assisting with observatory operations, and helping visitors connect with the wonder of birds and migration. 

Volunteering at LPBO can include remote field settings, communal living, long hours, and changing conditions like heat, cold, and insects. In return, you’ll gain hands-on experience and the chance to be immersed in one of North America’s most dynamic migration sites, witnessing exceptional bird diversity at the height of migration. 

Depending on the length of your stay, you may be based at one of LPBO’s three research stations, each offering a unique perspective on migration. Volunteers staying one month or longer receive basic accommodations and food, while shorter stays include a small nightly fee. Visits of less than one week are based at non-remote stations.
