Marshes and wetlands are home to captivating species with unique traits that help them thrive in wet environments. MarshWatch opens the door, inviting you to develop bird and frog identification skills, learn more about one of North America’s most threatened ecosystems, and how to help.
MarshWatch is a free, beginner-friendly volunteer training program tailored to each region. Designed as a stepping stone to programs like the Marsh Monitoring Program, it helps you build confidence and identification skills without the pressure of a formal survey.
MarshWatch consists of a series of interactive training webinars. Each webinar is recorded and made available online to help match everyone’s schedule and pace. While you’re taking part, we encourage you to visit wetlands in your area to practice your new skills!
Through MarshWatch, you will learn how to:
- Identify common wetland birds and amphibians (primarily frogs) in your local area.
- Submit observations through Birds Canada’s data platform, NatureCounts.
Along the way, you'll build a deeper connection to your local wetlands while contributing to the conservation of the birds, amphibians, and other wildlife that depend on them.

From migration monitoring to public engagement, LPBO offers volunteer opportunities to build skills, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to meaningful conservation work. More than a volunteer experience, this is a chance to live and learn at the heart of migration and become part of a community working together for birds.
